A visit to Udupi is incomplete without a visit to the famed Udupi Krishna Temple. This famed Idol of Krishna holds a “Kadagola”, as opposed to the usual flute. The “Kadagola” is an indian kitchen tool used to extract butter from buttermilk. The temple has a very special story attached to it.
Once Kanakadasa, a saint-poet, a pious worshipper and devotee of Lord Krishna, visited the temple. He was not allowed to enter the Udupi krishna temple due to his lower caste. He simply made a make-shift tent near the temple and spent his day singing devotional songs. That night, there was an earthquake and the outer temple wall cracked such a way that there was a wide enough game opening for Kanakadasa to have “Darshan” of the idol. Till today, devotees still worship Lord Krishna by praying through the same window where Kanakadasa was seeing the offerings / Pooja from outside. It is known as Kanakanakhindi, and is decorated by an arch named after him.
